The Hip Hop Nutcracker is a spectacle of hip hop dance set to Tchaikovsky’s traditional score. The evening-length production is performed by a cast of a dozen all-star dancers, a DJ, a violinist, and MC Kurtis Blow, one of the founding fathers of hip hop. Amidst digital graffiti in a dream setting, the characters Maria-Clara and the Nutcracker Prince battle a gang of mice, visit the land of sweets, and learn lessons of the holiday season. The vibrant grittiness of New York City replaces the 19th century German setting of the original by E.T.A. Hoffmann. But the warm lessons of love, community, and the joy of the holiday season are also present throughout this stellar remake.
