Day Of The Dead

Day Of The Dead
On the first weekend of November, the River Walk of San Antonio will host a celebration like no other. Marigolds will line the waterway and the aroma of incense will drift through the air while friends and families prepare special gifts for their loved ones. The Day of the Dead is the perfect occasion to remember that life is good, so come out and participate in this amazing cultural festival!

When and Where

The Day of the Dead observance will be held at La Villita Historic Arts Village on November 1 through 3. It will begin at 6 p.m. that Friday. You can order your tickets HERE. La Villita is located at 418 Villita Street, San Antonio, Texas 78205.

A Joyous Occasion

In addition to all the spectacular sights, there will be live music, fantastic food and drink, roaming dancers, and special activities for the kids. If you want to look the part, you can visit a face painting station to receive a calavera of your own. At the Barrio Gourmet, skilled chefs from San Antonio and Mexico will prepare classic fare like tacos, esquites, and quesadillas, as well as some special offerings for the event. While you’re at the River Walk, don’t forget to try some traditional pan de muerto, a sweet bread prepared just for the holiday.

Día de los Muertos

The Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos, is a family-friendly event that allows guests to celebrate life and remember their loved ones. The iconic Mexican holiday is rich with symbolism, from jovial skeletons to marigolds that signify impermanence and butterflies that represent renewal.

Catrinas on the River

This year, the Day of the Dead will be commemorated with San Antonio’s first-ever “Catrinas on the River” parade. The procession will begin at the Arneson Theatre, lead by traditional papier mâché giants known as mojigangas. The River Walk will then come alive with flowers and festive décor as barges make their way down the watercourse, each one sporting grinning calaveras and other figures. These illuminated boats are modeled after the vibrantly-decorated trajineras that cruise through Xochimilco, Mexico.
